Is anything free?

Hey there bud!

Don’t you love when random thoughts drop into your head? Sometimes I write about them instantly, and sometimes I just write out the sentence until later to chew on. This sentence was, what do you pay for and what’s free?

Popular quotes (ish): ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Nothing in life is truly free. Every gift has its price. Nothing good comes without a price.’ Okay we’ve all heard these a time or two!

From my own life, I always thought free was wonderful. As I’ve matured, I’ve also witnessed that free can absolutely come with a cost.

And although I’m not here to tell you how it is - I ask you to ponder for yourself - what is truly free, for you?

A gift with purchase? Kinda free, but you paid for the product to get the gift.
A gift from a loved one?
A bonus from work?
The love of your pet?
(I’m going to say, you kinda paid something for these things).

What is free, without feeling like you owe something back?

Most everything costs us something. I think it’s ok that things ‘cost’ us. The bigger question is, is it worth it? What are you willing to pay for and why? What does it ‘cost’ you? Move beyond money baby. It could cost you your time, self esteem, health, happiness, aliveness, truth, joy. So make sure it’s worth it.

A question that helped me understand what’s really free is this: What can’t you pay for? Ohhhhh ya, that’s a good question.

Time
Love
Your life (living)
Your birthday!
The life of those you love
Financial freedom
Unique talents - if I could pay to become a singer I would!
Inner peace
Nature
Trust
Connection
True friendship
Attraction
Laughter - you can pay for this - hello comedians!
The air we breathe
Health - tricky one. There’s a lot you can pay for to stay healthier. But if I could have paid money to prevent my Dad from dying from cancer I would have. So it’s on this list.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! I don’t take too long to write these, so I’m sure there are many more.

The point of this though is to really appreciate the things you have that you can’t buy. Appreciate the people who love you. You can’t make them love you.

How do you give back? Appreciate your list of things you can’t pay for. I believe this is the list that really matters.

And for whatever else you can buy - enjoy that too!

I know for sure I’ll be getting free drinks at the 2026 Calgary Stampede!! 💃🤠🥳

All my love,
K 💛
